Hotpools Wins

Hotpools won best new comic or best comic debut at the New Zealand Comics Awards last weekend. My prize was a giant book about 9/11 by Art Spiegelman with some great ye olde comics in the back. The event was held in an underground bunker somewhere hard to find in Wellington, it was very hot down there. I met some really nice people however (extra nice because they liked Hotpools) which has given me the resolve to kick arse and get Hotpools #4 finished.

I'm currently working on Hotpools #4 and thought I'd post covers of the older copies up. I was interested in horror when writing them, a mundane type of horror where the setting is very ordinary and something horrific happens, or the other way round, something mundane happens in a horrific situation.

Most of the stories are set in Christchurch where I grew up, there's something morbidly funny about Christchurch, it mirrors Los Angeles in it's geography but doesn't have the climate or any of it's other high living perks, it feels like a place outside time, a city without a reason to be. I've moved on since then, #4 will be a snack bar of old stuff that didn't fit the mundane horror theme and some new ideas I've been working on.
